Acknowledgments

Although our names are listed on the cover, we are by no means the only people who deserve credit for writing this book. We have been fortunate and honored to be surrounded by some of the very best people in the industry this book is their creation also.

From the outset, we wanted to create a book that would be readable. Two groups of people shared this goal and were instrumental in making it happen: our technical editors, Laura Robinson and Ronald Beekalaar, and the team at Microsoft Press. Laura did a lot to shape the early part of this book, and Ronald s incredible eye for detail kept us from making many embarrassing errors and contributed countless tips and tricks. Ronald was also the driving force in ensuring that the examples and prose in this book would be clear to non U.S. residents and non native English speakers. In the end, however, all errors and omissions are ours.

Readers who know the two of us will realize that Michelle Goodman, the copy editor, had one of the most daunting tasks of producing this book: taming our verbosity! Her attention to detail, memory, and remarkable ability to minimize the number of adverbs used per sentence proved invaluable. Dan Latimer, desktop publisher, and Joel Panchot, artist, did an amazing job of creating a great-looking book without their contributions, this book would be little more than a pile of Microsoft Word documents. Julie Miller, the project editor, pulled it all together a truly gargantuan task. Thank you! We also would like to thank the first person who worked on this book Martin DelRe, the acquisitions editor. Thanks for sticking with it, Martin!

We would like to acknowledge and thank JC Cannon for writing the three chapters on privacy and Jeff Williams for writing the two chapters on incident response. We also would like to thank the following people for reviewing material, answering questions, or otherwise contributing to this book: Jesper Johansson, Andreas Luther, Eric Fitzgerald, Mike Lonergan, David Cross, Joern Wettern, Joe Davies, Laudon Williams, William Dixon, Henry Voight, Rob Trace, Eric Schultze, Aaron Turner, Elliot Lewis, Mike Hintze, and Kristen McCarthy. We would also like to thank Emmanuel Dreux, David Burrell, and Greg Winston who contributed tools they had written to the CD that accompanies this book.

Most important, we would like to thank our wives: Beth Boatright and Krista Kunz. Their support and tolerance is remarkable and much appreciated more so than we can ever express in words. Thank you.
