Common Questions/Problems

Q:

Should you be concerned about IM traffic in terms of security?

A:

In a nutshellyes, absolutely. It's a vector of data transmission just like e-mail, is generally sent in the clear and unencrypted, and allows the transfer of files, and the clients themselves have been subject to numerous security vulnerabilities in the past. Your own corporate information security policy will dictate whether the risk of using IM is acceptable or not. Personally, we feel it is and that IM is an excellent addition to any business that could use the added convenience for coordinating between coworkers, friends, and family that otherwise would have involved a phone call or face-to-face meeting (the social ramifications of this we do not feel we are qualified to comment on). The caveat here is that we also use encrypting IM plugins (gaim-encryption, http://gaim-encryption.sf.net) and definitely advise that other people do the same.
