Rebooting the System

It is very important that you shut down your Nokia system cleanly so that any unsaved data is copied to the disk and the file systems are unmounted safely. To reboot your Nokia system from the command line, type reboot and press Enter. From Voyager, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to Voyager.

  2. Click Config.

  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the main Configuration screen and select Reboot, Shut Down System.

  4. Click either Reboot or Halt. Reboot will shut down the system and restart it again, and Halt will shut down the system for a power off (see Figure 20.1).

    Figure 20.1: System Reboot

Note

If you are used to typing sync; sync; reboot to restart a UNIX system, you can certainly do that as well. However, the reboot command does flush the file system cache to disk, so it is no longer necessary to use the sync command.

If you do not shut down your system cleanly for whatever reason, perhaps due to a power outage or if you simply hit the power switch or there was a system crash, your Nokia will probably boot up fine on its own, but there could be a time when the system does not come up without some intervention. When the file systems are not cleanly unmounted, UNIX systems will perform an fsck (file system check) during the boot process to check blocks and sizes, pathnames, connectivity, reference counts, and cylinder groups for file system integrity. If there is an error that the system cannot fix during the automatic fsck process, it will stop booting and wait for you to press Enter on your keyboard. The following is the message you will see on the console:

Automatic file system check failed. Enter pathname of shell or RETURN for sh:

Follow these steps to run fsck manually:

  1. Press Enter. You will then see an sh prompt (#). The system is in maintenance mode, so you have limited access to it at this stage.

  2. Change directories to /sbin by typing #cd /sbin.

  3. Run fsck –y. This command runs manually. Answer yes to any questions you are prompted with during the process. When the check is complete, you will return to the shell prompt.

  4. Type reboot to restart the boot process, and the system should come up on its own this time.

Note

You can use the commands reboot or halt from within the CLISH tool as well. If you type reboot save or halt save, the system will shut down cleanly after saving any applied changes.
