Chapter 20: Basic System Administration

Introduction

Once you have configured your Nokia so that it is up and functioning within your network environment, you might wonder how to accomplish the routine, day-to-day tasks that are part of a network administrator's job. Things such as package management and upgrades, performing system backups, and even replacing your IPSO operating system are often necessary to do at regular intervals.

Voyager was designed with the administrator in mind, and almost all the day-to-day tasks that you could think of can be handled through its interface. With each release of IPSO, Nokia adds more functionality to Voyager. For example, IPSO 3.5 and later allows you to schedule periodic tasks through cron with Voyager, something that could previously be done only from the command shell.
