Section 3.9. Case Study

3.9. Case Study

Your company has chosen DB2 as their RDBMS, and would like you to install DB2 Enterprise Server Edition (ESE) on a Windows machine. You have DB2 UDB Personal Edition (PE) with FixPak 8 installed on that machine, since you were learning DB2 on your own time. To install DB2 UDB ESE, you do not need to uninstall the DB2 UDB PE; you just need to install DB2 UDB ESE on top of DB2 UDB PE. When you run the DB2 ESE setup command, the installation goes through, but you receive the warning message shown in Figure 3.27.

You click on Yes, as you were using DB2 PE for training purposes. After this, the installation successfully completes.

Next you issue the command db2licm -l to confirm you installed the right product and to review the license status. Figure 3.28 shows the output of the command.

The response confirms that you have DB2 ESE installed, but now you realize it is a Try and Buy copy. You tell this to your manager, who calls the 1-800-IBM-SERV number to buy a permanent license.

Next, you issue the db2level command to ensure you are at the latest FixPak. Figure 3.29 shows the command's output.

You notice the FixPak level is 7. Since you know the latest FixPak is 8, you go to the IBM Support Web site and download FixPak 8. Because you are working on the Windows platform, only regular FixPaks are available; alternate FixPaks are not an option. Figure 3.30 shows the DB2 Technical support Web site.

NOTE

At the time this book was written, FixPak 8 for DB2 Version 8.2 was not available. We use this FixPak number hypothetically to illustrate how to work with FixPaks.

NOTE

Web site content changes constantly. The DB2 Technical Support Web site may change in the future or may not look as shown in Figure 3.30.

After applying FixPak 8, you again issue the db2level command to confirm it now shows the right FixPak level.

Now your company is ready to start working with DB2!
