Section 16.13. Summary

16.13. Summary

This chapter covered the main factors that affect the performance of your database system: CPU usage, I/O utilization, and memory usage.

To configure DB2 for optimal performance, you need to understand how the database and Database Manager Configuration parameters impact your applications and the overall system. The Configuration Advisor can facilitate your tuning efforts with respect to parameter configuration.

Examining maintenance operations like REORG and RUNSTATS help keep the database running optimally, but you will also need to monitor you system using either the Snapshot Monitor or the Event Monitor to be sure it is running efficiently. If the snapshots indicate that a particular SQL statement is performing poorly, you can examine its access plan using the Explain tool.

NOTE

For more information about performance topics, we recommend The Advanced DBA Certification Guide and Reference for DB2 Universal Database V8 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows by Dwaine R. Snow and Thomas X. Phan (Prentice Hall, 2004).
