Moving Files: Working Cross-Platform

Which platform should you start working on? Macintosh? Windows? Fortunately, Premiere and most of its files are native cross-platform formats. This means that you can move your raw Premiere projects, bins, and so on between different systems, as long as there is a version of Premiere installed on each computer. That means that you can take a Premiere project file started on a Windows platform and finish it on a Macintosh with Premiere. Keep in mind that not all aspects of a project are cross-platform, especially media files. There are a few points to keep in mind:

  • Make sure that file formats are cross-platform-compatible. (.AVI video clips might not play on a Macintosh, depending on which codecs were used, which OS platforms are being used, and which version of QuickTime you are running.)

  • Any fonts you use must have a cross-platform equivalent. (For example, Helvetica on the Macintosh correlates with Arial on a Windows platform.)

  • Most of Premiere's file settings can be transferred between platforms, except Filter Factory and Transition Factor settings (.PFF), command sets (.PFN), transition sets (.PFX), convolution kernel settings (.CVL), and Level filter settings (.LVL).

  • Files must be compliant with each platform's file-naming structure (the number of characters and spaces allowed in a filename).

author's note

To avoid cross-platform naming incompatibilities, I recommend using a traditional 8.3 naming structure when possible. This means that you should limit your filename to eight letters with a three-letter file type extension. It's perfectly fine to have folders with longer names. I just recommend keeping the filenames short.
