Chapter 1. Starting and Maintaining a Project

From the great Hollywood editors down to the person who simply wants to edit his home movies, everyone must start with the basics. Understanding the principal setup procedures is important for creating your next masterpiece. No matter what type of project you're working on, you need to have a well-thought-out plan. Some people like to work from storyboards, scripts, and outlines. Others simply digitize it all and cut from there. Whichever technique you choose, you need to be very specific and detailed in your approach. I don't just mean which visual effects you plan on using, but more importantly, the project's scope, the technical makeup of your materials, and the final distribution formats. Each of these factors needs to be determined before you begin digitizing any footage or adding any transitions. Start with Premiere's opening setup screen and project-setting preferences.
