Changing Speeds at the Source

You don't have to wait until you edit the clip into the timeline to change the clip's speed. You can change the speed or rate at which the clip plays in any of the Project, Bin, or Library windows. Do the following to change the speed of any source clip:

  1. Select the clip in the Project, Bin, or Library window.

  2. Select Clip > Speed.

  3. Enter the clip's new percentage rate or duration.

  4. Click OK.

note

Entering a negative value makes the clip play in reverse.

This changes the frame rate setting for your original source material. You can obviously repeat this process every time you need to switch rates, but that would be very time-consuming and wasteful, especially if you are using the same shot at different rates several times throughout your project. My suggestion is to duplicate the clip, rename it, and change its speed accordingly:

  1. Select the clip in the Project, Bin, or Library window.

  2. Select Edit > Copy or press Ctrl-C (Windows) or Command-C (Macintosh).

  3. Paste the clip into the same Project, Bin, or Library window by selecting Edit > Paste or by pressing Ctrl-V (Windows) or Command-V (Macintosh).

  4. Rename the new clip appropriately to differentiate it.

tip

Rename duplicate clips to help identify what is different between the original clips and the altered clips. If you change the rate of the new clip to 25%, you might consider giving the new clip the same name with a 25 added to the end of it. For example, if the original clip is named car_race, the altered clip would be named car_race25.
