CD-ROM Contents

On the accompanying CD-ROM disc, you will find programs for the Mac and PC that enhance your iPod and iTunes experience. Some programs are free for you to use and enjoy, whereas you have to pay for other programs should you choose to keep them. The disc contains three different categories of software, which are discussed in the following sections.

Freeware

This is software made by either a company or an individual who has decided not to charge for their work. Freeware is, as the name implies, free! If you do decide to keep and use any freeware program, it is customary to at least send an email to the creator thanking them for their generosity. This shows your appreciation, and a nice email is a sure way to keep them either updating the program, or creating other worthwhile programs.

Shareware

This is software that is usually free to use for a set amount of time, after which you agree to pay the price should you choose to continue using it. Shareware is not quite commercial software, but neither is it freeware. It falls somewhere in the middle. A shareware author is usually creating software in his spare time, and allows users to download and freely use it to get a taste of how it works before committing their money.

Commercial Software

These are the big boys of the software industry. More often than not, you have to pay for these programs before using them. However, some companies freely give away their programs for one reason or another. A prime example is the Apple Computers, Inc. program iTunes. iTunes is free to download and use. Apple does not charge a dime for iTunes, for either Mac or PC users. However, iTunes is still not freeware in the pure definition of the word, but rather commercial software that is given away. In this case, Apple gives away iTunes to boost iPod sales, as well as an incentive to use the program to purchase downloadable music from the iTunes Music Store.

XPlay for Windows is another commercial program found on the CD-ROM. This program, unlike iTunes, is not free, though they do allow you to use it in Demo mode, free of charge. In this case, XPlay uses a shareware form of distribution.

If you find software you enjoy on the CD-ROM, please take a moment to follow the licensing agreement of the program in question.

Tip

Read the licencing agreement before installing any software to be certain you are not installing any spyware programs as well!

Always run virus detection software on a PC before and after installing anything downloaded from the Internet.

As with any software found on a CD-ROM, you might want to check to see if there are updated versions of the software online before installing.

Macintosh iPod Software

These are the programs for Macintosh computers found on the accompanying CD-ROM.

PodWorks

One of the antitheft options Apple uses to prevent iPod users from simply plugging their iPod into another Mac and copying all his music files over, is its one-way transfer. In other words, you can only copy songs to the iPod, not from it. But what happens when your Mac dies, and you lose all your music files? You might still have them on the iPod, but that does you no good. The answer is a third-party utility titled "PodWorks" from developer Sci-Fi Hi-Fi. It copies all the file metadata from the ID3 (Identification Tag Studio3) stored on every song on the iPod. It then copies that data back to the "clean" version of iTunes on another Macintosh.

Macintosh iTunes Software

With iTunes and NiceCast, you can set up a playlist for DJ-like broadcasts. All anyone else needs to listen to your music is a streaming MP3 player, the address you are broadcasting from, and you are now your own radio station.

NiceCast is a very simple-to-use application, with a level of control not found in other, similar applications. You can set the compression level so that those with slower Internet connections are also able to listen.

RockStar

RockStar is a single- or multiperson music game that uses your very own iTunes library in a very new and innovative way. Do you remember the old game show "Name That Tune"? The concept is similar here. RockStar plays clips of your own iTunes music library, and gives you five multiple-choice answers.

The game gives you the choice of game play. You can either guess song title, artist, album, or a mixed bag of all three. During game play, you are presented with five choices, and the goal is to correctly answer in the shortest amount of time possible. During game play, a counter quickly counts down, so that when you make a correct selection, you are awarded the time left on the counter.

Multiplayer games, or "Party Games" as they are called, are a great deal of fun as well. Here, you can have up to five teams, and you rotate teams every five songs. The highest-scoring team wins. As the title suggests, this is a fun party game.

Price: $9.00

freshsqueeze.com/products/rockstar

Name That iTune!

Very similar to RockStar, it is a game that starts playing random music from your iTunes software. Your skill at answering the questions correctly, in a given time frame, reflects a good score. The questions range from naming the artists or song title. You are presented with four choices, and the longer it takes you to answer correctly, the lower your points. Not quite as much fun or polished as RockStar, but the price is better.

Also, if you imported music in which you had to manually name the songs, album, artist, and so on, you must reenter all that information again if you changed computers. With iTunes Library Manager, this is no longer a problem.
