Building an iDVD Project in a Hurry

iDVD includes many tools you can use to design every aspect of a DVD you are creating. These tools work very well, but they do take time and effort. Fortunately, there are some fast and easy ways to create a DVD for those times when you don't want to spend a lot of time building a DVD project but do want to get great results quickly.

Using iDVD's OneStep Tool

Using iDVD's OneStep tool, you can create an iDVD project, well, in one step. When you use this tool, the content on your camcorder is placed on a DVD as a single movie that plays automatically when the disc is inserted into a computer or a DVD player. You can't change anything about the movie nor customize it in any way. You should use this tool only when you want to place the contents of your camcorder on a DVD as-is. This can be handy for quickly moving a movie onto DVD or to archive the contents of a tape.

NOTE

To use the OneStep tool, the hard drive on which your startup volume is located must have enough free space for the digitized version of the movie and the encoded version. Use the information displayed when you start the process to determine whether your Mac has enough disk space to perform this task.

To create a DVD using the OneStep tool, perform the following steps:

1.

Connect your camcorder (with the tape you want to put on DVD) to your Mac and put it in playback mode.

2.

Insert a blank disc into your Mac's SuperDrive.

3.

Select File, OneStep DVD. Your Mac will rewind the camera and start moving the tape's contents to your Mac's hard drive. During this process, you can see the amount of video that has been captured and the amount that can be captured based on the room on the hard drive.

After that process is complete, iDVD will encode the file and then burn it to the DVD.

TIP

If you want to start the DVD at a certain point on the tape, click the camera's play button at that point while it is rewinding.

Creating an iDVD Project from Other iLife Applications

You can also quickly create an iDVD project from within iMovie or iPhoto.

Use iMovie to create a movie you want to put on DVD. When you are ready to put the movie in an iDVD project, open the iDVD pane and click the Create iDVD Project button. A new iDVD project will be created and the iMovie will be placed in it. If you added chapter markers to the movie, along with the movie itself, a scene selection menu will be created and will have a movie for each chapter in the movie. After the iDVD project has been created, you can use iDVD's tools to save it, customize it, and burn it to DVD.

You can quickly add photos in your iPhoto Library to an iDVD project from within iPhoto. Open the iDVD project to which you want to add the photos. Then, prepare the images you want to add within iPhoto, such as by placing them in a photo album. Select the images you want to move to iDVD and select Sharing, Send to iDVD. The images you selected will be prepared for iDVD and the iDVD will become active. A slideshow containing the images you selected will be created on the current menu in the iDVD project.
