Troubleshooting

I Can't See My iPod in iTunes

After I connect my iPod to my Mac, it doesn't appear in the Source pane.

There can be a number of reasons why an iPod isn't recognized by iTunes when you connect it to your computer. Solving this issue can usually be done by one of the following actions:

1.

Quit iTunes and restart it. This will often get iTunes to recognize the iPod.

2.

Update your software using the Mac OS X Software Update tool (Apple menu, Software Update). This will both update Mac OS X and also determine if your iPod software needs to be updated. If an iPod update is found, download it and install it. It will run automatically and you can update your iPod's software by following the on-screen instructions.

3.

If neither of these steps work, reset or restore the iPod. The exact steps you need to do for these tasks depend on the specific iPod you are using. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61705 for the steps to reset an iPod. See http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n60983 for the steps you need to restore your iPod.

CAUTION

When you restore an iPod, its contents are erased. Make sure you have saved copies of any information that you want to keep before you restore it.

4.

If none of this works, make sure the ports and cable you are using aren't defective.

I Can't Move Some Songs onto My iPod

When I perform an update, iTunes reports that some songs can't be updated because they can't be found.

This problem occurs when you have music in your Library that iTunes tries to put on an iPod, but it can't find the original files containing those songs. When this happens, you'll see a dialog box explaining the problem. In order to correct this, you have two choices. One is to remove the missing songs from the update process such as by removing them from playlists that are updated automatically or by deleting them from your Library. The second way is find the original files again and reassociate them with the pointer stored in the iTunes Library (click the question mark next to the missing song and use the resulting dialog box to move to and choose the files) or reimport the music into the iTunes Library.
