tip | If you accidentally select a language you can't read, you can use the information in the next section to reset the language even if you can't read the iPod's menus. |
On occasion, all your work configuring your iPod might not be what you intended. Fortunately, you can return the iPod settings to their default values with a single menu command. To do this, select Main menu, Settings, Reset All Settings. You'll see the Reset All menu. Highlight Reset and press the Select button. Your iPod's menus and all other settings will be returned to their default condition. You'll see the Language menu you use to select the language you want your iPod to use. Do so and you'll move to the Main menu. If you have set your iPod to use a language you can't read, you can reset it by selecting the Settings command, which is the fourth command on the Main menu (by default) and then selecting the last command on the Settings menu (which is the Reset All Settings command). On the resulting menu, choose the second command and press the Select button to reset the iPod. Of course, if you have customized the Main menu, the Settings command might or might not be the fourth one down. When you customize the Main menu, it is a good idea to remember where that command is, just in case. The Absolute Minimum In this chapter, you've explored many of the options on the Settings menu and learned a number of ways to make your iPod suit your personal preferences. Check out the following list to review what you have learned and to pick up a few more pointers: Use the Shuffle, Repeat, Sound Check, and Equalizer to configure how music plays on your iPod. You can determine which commands appear on the Main menu by using the Main menu settings. Use the Contrast setting to set the contrast of the iPod's screen for an iPod mini. Use the Sleep Timer to have your iPod go to sleep automatically. If you don't like the clicking sound the iPod makes when you press a button, you can turn it off. Your iPod is multilingual; use the Language settings to determine which language your iPod uses. You can restore your iPod to its factory settings with the Reset All Settings command. The About command on the Settings menu provides important information about your iPod, including its name, its disk capacity, its available space, the software version installed on it, its model, and its serial number. The Date & Time settings enable you to configure and work with your iPod's clock. You'll learn about those settings in Chapter 10. You use the Contacts setting to choose how contacts on your iPod are displayed. You'll learn about that in Chapter 10, too. The Legal setting takes you to the oh-so-useful Legal screen, which contains lots of legalese you can read should you have absolutely nothing else to do.
