Chapter 21. Sharing iTunes Music over a Network

In This Chapter

  • Learn how iTunes can share its music on your network.

  • Get generous and share your iTunes music with others.

  • Listen to music other people are sharing with you.

  • Share your music over the air with AirTunes and an AirPort Express Base Station.

With such a great collection of music in your iTunes Library, I'm sure you don't want to keep that music to yourself. So be generous and share that music with others. And, enjoy music that is shared with you.

If two or more computers are connected via a local network and with the broad use of high-speed Internet connections, networks are becoming common even in homes these days you can share the music in your iTunes Library with other people on your network. They can listen to that music as if it was stored in their own Libraries. Of course, assuming other folks on your network are also generous, you can listen to music they share with you as well.

If you use the multiuser features of Mac OS X, you can also share your music with other people who use your computer in the same way.

note

In case you are wondering, you can't use iTunes to share your music over the Internet. You can only share on a local network, such as the one in your home or business.

If you want to share your music even with noncomputer devices, you can use AirTunes and an AirPort Express to do so.
