Summary

Today you studied Java 2 Enterprise Edition concepts and the technologies involved in the J2EE specification. You started your day with a quick look at the background of application servers and the different features of application servers, such as instance pooling, connection management, transaction management, security, load balancing, and so on. You then took a brief look at the J2EE concepts and the three areas that the J2EE specification spans: components, containers, and connectors. After this, you started the main focus area for the day: the different technologies that make up the J2EE specification. These technologies were Java Servlet API, JavaServer Pages, JSP tag libraries, Enterprise JavaBeans, Java Transaction API, Java Message Services API, and the J2EE Connector Architecture.

The next part of the day was spent in understanding the Model View Controller architecture. You learned about the Model I and Model II architectures and how J2EE technologies fit in the MVC architecture.

In the final part of the day, we presented the requirements for a sample MVC application, the airline ticket booking system, that you will build as you learn each of the technologies that the WebLogic Server supports. You then worked on designing the MVC application. As a part of the design activities, you saw the Entity-Relationship diagram for the database that will be used in the airline ticket booking system application. You then discovered the different classes for the MVC application and learned the packages in which they are organized.

This completes your initial introduction to the J2EE specification and the technologies involved in it. You are set to begin your journey in the study of WebLogic Server!
