Summary

Today's lesson covered the concepts of the Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI). You started the day studying the concepts of naming and directory services. You also looked at the life cycle of a JNDI application and the steps for writing the server- and client-side parts of a JNDI application. After this you studied the important classes and interfaces in the JNDI API that are part of the javax.naming package and are used by client applications and server objects to interact with a naming service. Then you took a look at the classes and interfaces in the javax.naming.directory package. Finally, you wrote a sample JNDI application that demonstrated the use of the naming and directory services.

The JNDI API is the primary means of registering and accessing J2EE server-side components such as EJBs along with JDBC DataSources and message queues. An understanding of the use of the JNDI API will put you on a firm footing to study EJBs in the coming days.
