Applying a Page Border

3 4

The techniques you've learned for adding a border to a section or object in your document can be used to add a border to the entire page, as well. Start the process, as usual, by choosing Format, Borders And Shading. When the Borders And Shading dialog box appears, click the Page Border tab.

The only visual difference is the addition of the Art drop-down list (covered in the next section), but you can make all your border choices, and the border will be applied to the entire page. Here's the process:

  1. Choose Format, Borders And Shading to display the Borders And Shading dialog box.
  2. On the Page Border tab, click the border type you want (Box, Shadow, 3-D, or Custom).
  3. Select a line style you want in the Style list.
  4. Select a color, if applicable.
  5. Click the Width down arrow and choose the line width you want. Each of these settings is reflected in the Preview section.
  6. Click OK to close the dialog box. By default, the border is added to all the pages in the current document. (See Figure 24-5.) If you want to apply the border to a specific section, you can click the Apply To down arrow and make that selection.

Tip - Skip the first page border

When you add a page border, Word applies the border to all the pages in your document. What if you want to skip the border on one page? To suppress the display of the border for first pages, choose Format, Borders And Shading, click the Page Border tab, click the Apply To down arrow, and select This Section – All Except First Page.

Art Border, Anyone?

Another feature, known in earlier versions of Office as BorderArt, enables you to add an artistic touch to entire pages in your document. Special graphics are placed in patterns—both black and white and color—and used to border the page. To apply an art page border, follow these steps:

  1. Start anywhere in the document to which you want to add the border.
  2. Choose Format, Borders And Shading. The Borders And Shading dialog box appears.
  3. Click the Page Border tab. Most of the options remain the same, but now the Art drop-down list is available.
  4. Click the Art down arrow and scroll through the art borders. Select the one you want. The Preview section shows your change. (See Figure 24-6.)

  5. When you've selected the art border you want, click OK. The border is added to all pages.

Note

Art borders are colorful and vibrant—and they can also be a bit much for some professional documents. For that reason, use art borders sparingly.

Troubleshooting

I Accidentally Created Separate Tables

You've selected the text you want to surround with a border, but when you create the border, Word divides the selection and draws one border around the heading and another around the text. How do you combine both borders into one rectangular border? There are two workarounds for this problem: First, try selecting a larger section that extends at least one line both before and after the item you want to border. Then select the border as you would normally. If the border's still breaking the text into two separate boxes, copy the information in the second box, place the insertion point following the line of text where the break occurs, and press Shift+Enter to add a "soft" line break, and press Ctrl+V to paste. You might have to do a little reformatting to get your information to look right, but this should resolve the border break problem.
