Upgrade #1: Adding an External CD or DVD Drive

As with just about every type of peripheral, the easiest type of installation is the external one. Choose a USB- or FireWire-compatible CD or DVD drive, and all you have to do is follow these simple steps:

1. If your CD/DVD drive has its own power supply, plug the new drive into a live electrical outlet.

   It doesn't matter which type of optical drive you're adding; the steps for installing a CD-ROM, CD-R/RW, or CD/DVD drive are all the same.

2. Connect the drive to an open USB or FireWire port on your PC.

3. When the new drive is detected by Windows, follow the onscreen instructions to install the proper device drivers.
