Interpreting Site Statistics

Site statistics can be fascinating. You should check yours regularly, and read them with a discerning eye. The stat table above told us that not only AvantGo, but also Inktomi, Internetseer, and Google spiders check this site frequently. This means it is probably indexed correctly in most major search engines. There is a separate log provided by most shared hosting services, and that you can produce yourself with any one of a number of free Open Source programs if you run your own servers, that can tell you which URLs sent visitors to yours. This log will help you determine how effective your efforts at getting good search engine listings have been. You may also find that sites you don't even know about have linked to you, and if you are running banner ad campaigns, the referral log can help you tell how well they're working.

You can also tell how many people have looked at each page on your site. If you are displaying products, this is a good gauge of interest in your wares, and a check of the number of sales versus the number of pageviews for each product can tell you what percentage of shoppers who look at each item actually buy it. If you have a few products that consistently draw many lookers, but very few buyers, you need to ask questions. Is the price too high? Is the product illustration unappealing? Is this item often out of stock? Web site statistics cannot answer these questions, but they can certainly help you figure out what questions to ask.
