Start Small, then Grow

A small business's first Web site can be so simple that a skilled Web designer can build it in an hour or less probably after spending several hours telling you why you need more features than you really need at the beginning. Here are the necessary ingredients:

  • Business name, address, and telephone number.

  • Catchy description of products and services offered.

  • Several paragraphs of sales copy that give customers quantifiable reasons why they should patronize your business instead of a competitor's.

  • Several pictures of the physical facility, not totally devoid of life, but with employees and, hopefully, customers, in at least some of the shots.

This kind of Web site can be put together rapidly and cheaply, never needs to be revised unless you change your products or ser-vices, or move or change your telephone number, and can be hosted by any one of thousands of ISPs or Web hosting services for as little as $10 per month, which is less than a bold-faced listing costs in many local telephone directories. How much business it will bring in depends on local conditions, how well the site is placed in search engines, and the general level of demand for the products or services you provide.

We are talking minimum effort here, a glorified brochure that costs next to nothing to distribute one that can contain color pictures at no extra cost and that has no print-style text length restrictions. A humble site, perhaps, but there is nothing wrong with that. More information can be added later. It is better to start small and grow than to enter with a bang and later retreat with a whimper.
