Chapter 1. First Things First

If you run Windows, you can install OOo from the CD included with this book. But OOo is constantly being improved, so you may want to check the OpenOffice.org Web site for the latest downloadable version and install that one instead.

The OpenOffice.org Web site.

The CD also contains a version for Linux. However, if you're a Linux user, your best bet is to check your distribution's download repository for binary files made to integrate directly with your favorite "flavor" of Linux. This will make installation easier and smoother.

Since development of OOo for Mac OS X was lagging behind the Linux and Windows versions when I wrote this bookover three months before it was publishedMac users should check both the OpenOffice.org Web site and the NeoOffice.org Web site to see which one is more up-to-date. NeoOffice currently looks like the best bet; it integrates smoothly with the Mac OS X structure, while the "main" OOo Mac version requires X11 knowledge to get going.

NeoOffice.

Once you get OpenOffice.org installed, though, it works almost exactly the same on any operating system. What you learn from reading this book and watching the videos is applicable no matter what kind of computer you use.
