With SP2 installed on your machine, there's a new feature in Internet Explorer that you're really going to like especially if, like me, you're easily annoyed by the proliferation of pop-up advertising on the Web. This new feature is the Pop-up Blocker; when activated, it does a darned good job of blocking most of those annoying pop-up windows. You activate the Pop-up Blocker by opening the Internet Options dialog box, selecting the Privacy tab, and checking the Block Pop-ups option. When activated, every time IE encounters and successfully blocks a pop-up window, IE will display a bar at the top of the offending Web page telling you that it's just blocked a pop-up, like the one in Figure 8.15. Figure 8.15. Blocking a pop-up window with IE's new Pop-up Blocker. If you want to allow the pop-up, just click the bar and select either Temporarily Allow Pop-ups or Always Allow Pop-ups from This Site from the pop-up menu. (This lets you work with those sites few and far between that actually have beneficial pop-up windows.) |
