In the previous chapter I told you about the new image-management functions of the My Pictures folder. In this chapter I'll show you how to fill up that folder with image files from digital cameras and scanners.

Windows XP incorporates a new standard, first available in Windows Me, called Windows Image Acquisition (WIA). WIA enables compatible imaging devices to integrate directly into the Windows shell. Under Windows XP, any WIA digital camera or scanner can be accessed from the Open dialog box of any application. So, for example, you could launch Microsoft Paint or Paint Shop Pro, select File, Open, and see the contents of your digital camera or scanner listed in the Open dialog box. This way you can work on digital images without first copying them to your PC's hard disk.

Any digital camera or scanner that is attached to your computer is visible from My Computer, and can be viewed and accessed as you would a normal hard drive. You can also use Windows XP's new Scanner and Camera Installation Wizard to choose which pictures you want to copy to your PC.
