The Bottom Line

The nice thing about Windows Messenger is how easy it makes everything. There's no big production about adding and configuring cameras and microphones. All you do is send a message, start a conversation, and then add sound and picture as desired. Just remember these key points:

  • Windows Messenger is an instant messaging program that also offers Internet telephony and video conferencing, and is functionally identical with Microsoft's companion program, MSN Messenger.

  • To use Windows Messenger, you need a Microsoft Passport.

  • You create a list of contacts you want to talk to. You can fill this list by searching the contacts in your personal Address Book, or the Microsoft Hotmail subscriber list.

  • To send an instant message, double-click a name in your contact list; to conduct a group chat, start a conversation with the first user, and then invite other users to join you.

  • You're not limited to sending instant messages to your contacts. You can also send files and e-mail messages.
