One-to-One Messaging

Windows Messenger lets you send basic one-to-one messages, or use Messenger to send files and e-mails.

Send a Message

To send an instant message to another user, follow these steps:

1.

Double-click the name of the contact you want to message.

2.

When the Conversation window opens (see Figure 10.4), enter your message in the lower part of the window, then click the Send button (or press Enter).

3.

Your message appears in the top part of the window, as does your contact's reply.

Continue talking like this, one message after another. Your entire conversation will be displayed in the top part of the window, and you can scroll up to reread earlier messages.

You can change the font face, color, style, and size of your message by clicking the Font button. When the Change My Message Font dialog box appears, select the settings you want, then click OK. The next message you send will reflect the new formatting you selected.

NOTE

If you don't have a Hotmail account, this technique will instead launch your normal e-mail program.

Receive a Message

When someone else sends you an instant message, Windows lets out with a little bleeping sound and then displays an alert in the lower-right corner of your screen. To open and reply to the message, click the alert.

If you happen to miss the alert, Windows will display a flashing message button in the taskbar. You can click this button to read your message.

Send an E-mail

You're not limited to sending instant messages to people on your contact list. You can also send e-mail messages directly from Windows Messenger.

Just right-click a name on your list and select Send E-mail from the pop-up menu. This launches Internet Explorer, sends it to the Hotmail site, and loads the Compose page. Write your message and send it as you would any Hotmail message.

Send a File

Another feature of Windows Messenger is the capability to send a file direct to another user. It's easy to do:

1.

Right-click a name in your contact list.

2.

Select Send a File or Photo from the pop-up menu.

3.

When the Send a File dialog box appears, select the file you want to send, and then click Open.

NOTE

Conversations can take place between a maximum of five people (that's four plus you).

Windows Messenger now sends, to your contact, a request to transfer the file. When the contact accepts the file, you're notified.

Open a File

If one of your contacts sends you a file, you'll receive a message informing you that you have a file waiting. Click the link within the message to open the file.

Alternatively, you can select File, Open Received Files from the main Messenger window. This opens a folder that contains all the files sent to you. Find the file you want to open, then click it.
