Transferring Songs to Other Portable Music Players

If you have another brand of portable music player, you'll use other methods to transfer music from your PC to your portable device. Some portable players have their own transfer/player software, similar to iTunes. Others appear to your PC as a new disk drive and require you to copy files using My Computer.

Learn about copying files with My Computer in Chapter 6, "Working with Files and Folders."

Still other portable music players let you copy songs using Windows Media Player. It's not that hard a process, as long as you prepare a playlist to copy beforehand. Then you connect your player and follow these steps:

  1. From within WMP, select the Copy to CD or Device screen, shown in Figure 34.4.

  2. In the left pane, pull down the Items to Copy list and select the playlist you want to transfer.

  3. In the right pane, pull down the Items on Device list and select your portable music player.

  4. Click the Copy button in the top right corner.

That's it; the playlist you selected will now be copied to your portable device.

The Absolute Minimum

Here are the key points to remember from this chapter:

  • Copying digital music files from your PC to a portable music player is typically as easy as connecting the player to your PC.

  • You manage the files you want to copy on your PC beforehand even creating playlists of your favorite songs.

  • The most popular portable music player today is the Apple iPod, which uses the iTunes software to manage all of its song transfers.

  • Other portable music players use either their own propriety transfer software or Windows Media Player to move songs from your PC to the portable device.
