In this chapter
The Internet is a huge repository for computer files of all shapes and sizes, from utilities that help you better manage your disk drive to full-featured email and newsgroup programs. There are hundreds of thousands of these programs available somewhere on the Internet; if you can find them, you can download them to your computer. Many of the programs you find online are available free; these programs are called freeware. Other programs can be downloaded for no charge, but they require you to pay a token amount to receive full functionality or documentation; these programs are called shareware. (Both types of programs are in contrast to the software you buy in boxes at your local computer retailer, which is commercial software.) |
