OpenVMS has the capability to:
Examine hardware status reports.
Monitor CPU, disk, and memory performance either locally or across the cluster.
Monitor file system performance.
Monitor network performance.
Monitor hardware errors.
Automatically or manually adjust system parameters to change performance.
Tune OpenVMS according to the physical resources it supports.
The system manager is responsible for monitoring the system operation. This includes monitoring the hardware for error reports and optimizing hardware and software resources for the average workload. These tasks should be carried out periodically, and long-term statistics must be maintained so that changes from the norm can be quickly identified and isolated. Waiting until the system is performing badly to collect this data is not effective management.
