Summary

Software licensing is constantly changing. Licenses issued years ago have been superseded (e.g., the ClusterWide license of the 1980s does not exist any more). Also, licenses for older technology (e.g., a VAX or an early Alpha server) do not apply to newer machines (e.g., an OpenVMS Base license must be formally transferred via Compaq/HP from machine to machine). This phenomenon will never go away, because technology is always changing. In view of changing licensing requirements, Compaq/HP must be contacted to find out how older licenses can be applied to newer software.

  • The License database location is defined by the logical, LMF$LICENSE.

  • The product authorization key (PAK) contains the information that is loaded into the license database.

  • LICENSE is used to manage the license database.

  • $SYSMAN LICENSE can be used to manage licenses on more than one node.

  • LICENSE is used to display the permanent license database.

  • SHOW LICENSE displays the licenses that are currently active (loaded) on a particular CPU in the volatile database.

  • @SYS$UPDATE:VMSLICENSE is an interactive command file to assist the system manager in maintaining the license database.

  • The License Unit Requirement Table (LURT) specifies the number of units required by the CPU. It is in SYS$SYSTEM:LMF$LURT.DAT.

  • The software product description (SPD) for the product describes the license requirements and ordering information.
