OpenVMS has the capability to:
Boot with minimal operator intervention.
Boot in any of several unusual circumstances.
Reconfigure itself for optimal site-specific operation.
Dump memory before shutdown.
Examine key operating system data structures while operating.
Normally, the hardware will start booting when power is applied, but this action can be configured to start with the console prompt instead. Furthermore, once at the console prompt, standard hardware tests can be performed one at a time, or various extended diagnostics can be performed on the hardware components. There are various types of boot options, which will be explained in detail:
Default
Conversational (to interactively adjust system parameters and enter SYSTEM password)
Standalone (for certain disk backup and restore situations)
