Connecting to Outlook

 < Day Day Up >

The exercises included in this book assume that you already have an active connection to an e-mail server. From time to time, you will want to set up a new connection when, for example, you are connecting from home to an account on your organization's server, or when connecting to your Hotmail, MSN, or other e-mail account.

If you don't have an accessible account set up in Outlook, there is a simple method of setting one up, through the Windows Control Panel.

In this exercise, you will set up a new Outlook account on your computer without a current Outlook connection.

Tip

In this exercise, we set up a Hotmail account as an example. You can follow these basic steps to set up any type of account: Microsoft Exchange Server, POP3, IMAP, HTTP, or another type of mail server. If you set up a non-HTTP account, you might need to complete additional pages of the E-mail Accounts Wizard.

BE SURE TO start your computer, but don't start Outlook before beginning this exercise. You will need an active Internet or network connection in order to access your mail server.

  1. Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.

  2. In Control Panel, switch to Classic View if necessary, and then double-click Mail.

    The E-mail Accounts wizard starts.

  3. On the Server Type page, select the type of server to which you are connecting.

  4. Click Next.

  5. On the Internet E-mail Settings page, enter the user information for the account you're setting up.

  6. Click Next, and then click Finish.

The Mail Setup dialog box appears.

  7. If you are finished setting up accounts, click Close. Alternately:

    • To set up a new e-mail account or change an existing account, click E-mail Accounts.

    • To change the location in which Outlook stores your data files, click Data Files.

    • To set up multiple user profiles or change an existing profile, click Show Profiles.

For the purposes of this exercise, we clicked Close.

  8. When you are done, close Control Panel and start Outlook.

Your new account is displayed and accessible.
