Overview of Deploying Office 2003 with the MUI Pack

Including the Microsoft Office 2003 Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI Pack) in a Microsoft Office 2003 deployment is a two-step process that requires some decisions ahead of time, including whether to allow users to install their own languages, or whether to install MUI Packs with Microsoft Office 2003 or after Office 2003. After you decide when and how to install MUI Packs, you customize your deployment (for example, you configure the language settings and deploy the MUI Packs to your organization.

MUI Pack components

Office 2003 with MUI Pack is English Office 2003 with a MUI pack for each available non-English language of Office. The MUI Pack for Office 2003 has the following components you use to deploy a customized multilingual installation:

  • MUI Packs (Mui.msi files) Each language has its own package (MSI file) and can be customized individually. By default behavior, the features of a MUI Pack use the same installation state as the corresponding features in Office unless you want them to be different. For example, suppose Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 is configured not to be installed with Office, and Microsoft Office Word 2003 is configured to be installed on users’ local disks. When the MUI Pack is installed, the corresponding language files for Outlook will be set to install on demand while all Word language files will be installed locally.

  • MUI wizard Setup (Muisetup.exe) You use this program with the /a option to create an administrative installation point for the languages you select. Users can also deploy MUI Packs by running this program to call the MUI Pack Wizard.

  • MUI Pack Wizard (Muiwiz.msi) Used by MUI Pack Setup, this wizard enables users to choose which languages to install and configures the user interface, Help, and installation language settings to be set during Setup.

Overview of the MUI Pack deployment process

A MUI Pack deployment generally follows these steps:

  1. Create an administrative installation point for Office 2003.

  2. Create an administrative installation point for the MUI Pack files you want to deploy (you can use the Office administrative installation point or a separate server share).

  3. Customize your MUI Pack installation.

Use the Custom Installation Wizard to create a transform for Office, for individual MUI Packs, or for both. For an Office transform, you can store language settings with other Office settings in an Office profile settings file (OPS file), or set language settings in the Custom Installation Wizard. For a MUI Pack transform, you can customize feature states and Setup properties in the Custom Installation Wizard.

Note that language settings—such as the Help language and installed version of Microsoft Office—cannot be set when you customize individual MUI Pack installations. Instead, customize these settings when you deploy Office.

  4. Configure Setup.ini to chain the installation of one or more languages packs with your Office deployment. (If you use Microsoft Systems Management Server deployment, this step is not needed.)

  5. Deploy Office with selected MUI Packs to your users.

Typically Office is installed on users’ computers before the MUI Pack files, but you can circumvent this default process by using the Setup property CHECKINSTALLORDER. You set this option when you cannot ensure the deployment order for the components being installed—for example, if you are deploying by using Group Policy technologies for software installation or Systems Management Server.

  6. Install one or more MUI Packs (possibly in addition to MUI Packs you have already installed with Office) by using a separate customized Setup settings file (Setup.ini) or by allowing users to choose MUI Packs with the MUI Pack Wizard.

Note

When you install Office 2003 with the Multilingual User Interface Pack, or when you install individual MUI Packs, all corresponding Office 2000 or Office XP language pack files on users’ computers are deleted by default. If you plan to keep some Office 2000 or Office XP applications, however, you can retain the Office 2000 or Office XP language packs. Specify KEEPLPK9=1 in the [Options] section of Setup.ini or in a transform for each Office 2003 MUI pack that you install, or specify KEEPLPK=1 on the Setup command line. Similarly, to retain Office 2000 or XP Proofing Tools, specify KEEPPTK9=1.

Resources and related information

In some deployment scenarios, you must know the locale identifier (LCID) for a language in order to install the correct MUI Pack. A table with this information is included in “Office 2003 MUI Pack Languages and Corresponding Locale Identifiers” in Chapter 14, “Deploying Office 2003 Multilingual Resources.”
