Chapter 13 -- Design Methodologies and Management

The Microsoft Solutions Framework (MSF) is a flexible interrelated series of models that guides an organization through the process of assembling the resources, people, and techniques needed to ensure that their technology infrastructure and solutions meet their business objectives. The models help guide software development and deployment through the planning, building, and management cycles.

For planning, the MSF provides an Enterprise Architecture Model. For building, the MSF provides the Team, Process, Application, and Risk and Change Management Models. For managing, the MSF provides Infrastructure, Operations, and Total Cost of Ownership Models. This lesson describes each model of the Microsoft Solutions Framework.

After this lesson, you will be able to:
  • List the issues related to software development that the Microsoft Solutions Framework help your organization address.
  • Describe the six roles of the MSF Team model.
  • Identify the four phases of the MSF Process model and describe the major milestone associated with each phase.
  • Define a service and describe the three categories of services in the MSF Application model.
  • List key questions that each phase of the Enterprise model asks to help you manage a technology infrastructure.
  • Describe the three phases of the MSF Solutions Design model.
  • Identify the three areas added to the Logistics role of the SMSF Team model to expand it for infrastructure deployment.
  • Describe the three key stages of the MSG Total Cost of Ownership model.
