Windows 3.1 is a 16-bit operating environment that runs on the MS-DOS operating system.

Networking support was added in version 3.11, Windows for Workgroups. Windows 3. x was intended for standalone users in MS-DOS-based desktop environments. Windows 95 and Windows NT Workstation have replaced Windows 3. x as the primary desktop operating systems.
