Chapter 1

Before You Begin

This book is more than a simple study aid for Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0. Parts 1 and 2 will help you to create, step by step, a small managed network using SMS server and client features. Part 3 presents you with planning, site expansion, and maintenance tasks that lay the foundation for building and managing enterprise implementations of SMS 2.0. This chapter introduces you to the primary features of SMS. Pay particular attention to terminology in Chapter 1, as it will be used throughout this book and in the application of this management tool.

There are no installation requirements for this chapter. However, make sure you read the section, "About This Book" which explains how to configure your computers in preparation for doing the tasks explained in Chapter 2 and beyond.
