Deployment Overview

After designing, building, and testing a digital dashboard, the next step is to deploy it to a server. Microsoft Office XP Developer includes the ability to copy dashboard projects from one location to another on the same server. However, Office XP Developer does not support the deployment of digital dashboards from one server to another. To facilitate deployment of dashboard solutions onto a production server, this chapter describes the following two approaches:

  • Use the Application Deployment Wizard in the Microsoft Web Storage System Software Development Kit (SDK) to package and deploy the dashboard project onto a server by using digital dashboards.
  • Save Web Parts as Extensible Markup Language (XML) Interchange format (dwp), and import them into a newly created dashboard project on a server by using digital dashboards.

The first approach uses the Application Deployment Wizard. This wizard packages and deploys all items related to a digital dashboard, such as subdashboards and Web Parts, including all of their associated properties, in a simple two-step process. The second approach does not facilitate deployment of a digital dashboard to another server. However, with the second approach, users can save Web Parts to their local file systems in an XML Interchange format (.dwp) and then import them into a new dashboard project on a server that uses digital dashboard technology.

With the latter approach, the method does not transfer the associated metadata of the digital dashboard into the newly created project.

This chapter presents both approaches for deploying a digital dashboard from one server to another. By using these methods, you can export and import dashboards from SharePoint Portal Server to different data sources such as an Exchange 2000 computer, a computer running a SQL Server dashboard, or another SharePoint Portal Server computer.
