You must use a minimum of two servers to use RapPort to deploy a SharePoint Portal Server workspace. You can use a single server as the RapPort server and the template server. You also need at least one destination server. However, you can modify this architecture by creating multiple template servers, regional RapPort servers, and potentially dozens of destination servers.
The following table shows the recommended hardware capacity in relation to SharePoint Portal Server recommendations.
Capacity Recommendations
Server Type | Hardware Recommendation |
---|---|
The RapPort server. This server experiences moderate load. |
|
The template server. This server experiences minimal user activity. |
|
The destination server. This server experiences variable user activity depending on the number of workspaces. | To estimate destination server capacity, see Chapter 7, Planning Server Capacity. |
RapPort is an application designed to run on a computer running SharePoint Portal Server. Consequently, you must meet the requirements for SharePoint Portal Server in addition to those for RapPort. For more information about these requirements, see Chapter 11, Installing SharePoint Portal Server. RapPort has three types of requirements—the system requirements for the RapPort servers; requirements for client computers; and requirements of the corporate infrastructure.
All servers that participate in the RapPort deployment require the following configuration:
In order to run the RapPort Setup Wizard, the client computer will require the following configuration:
or
RapPort is dependent upon several infrastructure components in order to provision portals. These include:
For client and server environments that differ from the configuration described in this chapter, revisions to the RapPort source code will be necessary. For example, if you do not use Active Directory to manage user objects, you must modify the Request Wizard to accommodate this change. For detailed information about the application structure, see Appendix B.
For a list of required service packs, or other required items not specified in this section, see the Readme file in the Tools\RapPort directory on the Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server Resource Kit CD.
Do not create any workspaces on the destination server during installation of SharePoint Portal Server.
