Remote Storage

Remote Storage uses reparse points to mark files that have some of their state stored remotely. The user accesses a file that is in Remote Storage through a placeholder stored on the local computer. The corresponding file system filter uses the information stored in the reparse point to access the data from the storage location. The reparse point contains the allocation information necessary to identify and retrieve the state of the file that is stored remotely and is needed by NTFS to retrieve the file.
