Chapter 19. The IMS System Definition Process:

The IMS system definition process:

  • Describes the IMS resources to IMS:

    - At installation time

    - When maintenance is applied

    - When standard application definition changes are required

  • Assumes a working knowledge of the z/OS system modification program/extended (SMP/E). SMP/E is required for installation and is used as part of the IMS system definition process.

  • Is evolving to be more dynamic (versus static) over time.

Related Reading: For information about SMP/E, see the SMP/E V3R2.0 User's Guide.

Extended Terminal Option (ETO), a separately priced feature of IMS TM, enables you to define resources dynamically, without shutting down IMS. With ETO, you can dynamically add or delete VTAM terminals and users to your IMS outside of the IMS system definition process. For more information about ETO, see "The Extended Terminal Option (ETO)" on page 338.
