Appendix B. Case Study

This appendix contains the Executable UML models for the online bookstore domain. Why did we pick an online bookstore? We could have picked something like heavy equipment leasing or transport logistics or train scheduling. (And we have some truly fascinating models for these domains.) But those would have required significant work to learn the domain. On the other hand, most of you have already bought something online. Perhaps that's how you bought this book! So we can start with something easy.

You'll note that the models are very simple. Many seemingly reasonable features (such as the ability to cancel an order) have been omitted. We did this for three reasons:

  • Simplicity and clarity: We did not want to obscure the models with too much application complexity. (But there's enough complexity to show how we deal with real issues.)

  • Exercises to the reader

  • Incremental development: We wanted to show how Executable UML is appropriate for incremental projects you do not have to develop the whole domain all at once.

These models can be downloaded from www.executableumlbook.com.
