mail-enabled

An Active Directory object that has been configured with an e-mail address but does not have a mailbox in the Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 organization. User accounts, groups, contacts, and public folders can be mail-enabled in Exchange Server 2003.

mailbox-enabled

An Active Directory user account that has been configured with a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 mailbox and can receive mail in the Exchange Server 2003 organization.

Mailbox Merge Wizard

A Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 utility designed to move mailboxes in bulk between Exchange Server 2003 organizations.

Mail Exchanger (MX) record

A Domain Name System (DNS) record that defines an e-mail server.

MAPI

See Message Application Programming Interface (MAPI).

masquerade domain

A configuration option that allows you to specify a different domain name in the From and Mail From fields for outgoing Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) e-mail messages.

Message Application Programming Interface (MAPI)

The API used by Microsoft Outlook to access collaboration data. MAPI is also used as the transport protocol between Outlook clients and Microsoft Exchange Server servers.

message transfer agent (MTA)

A Microsoft Exchange component that uses the X.400 protocol to route messages to other Exchange MTAs, information stores, connectors, and third-party gateways.

metabase

A store that contains metadata, such as that used by Internet Information Services (IIS).

metadata

Data that describes other data, such as that within Active Directory or the structure of an information store.

Microsoft Cluster Service

A Microsoft Windows Server 2003 service that allows for the creation of active/active and active/passive clusters. Microsoft Cluster Service clusters are application-aware and can fail over services from one node to another. These types of clusters do not provide fault tolerance benefits.

Migration Wizard

A Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 utility used to migrate mailboxes from one organization to another. The Migration Wizard is often used in conjunction with the Active Directory Migration Tool to migrate user account information in the process.

MIME

See Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME).

mixed mode

The default operation of Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, mixed mode provides backwards compatibility with Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 servers in an organization at the expense of being able to use certain Exchange Server 2003–only features.

Monitoring And Status utility

A tool provided with Exchange System Manager that monitors the status of Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 servers and connections and logs events to the application log of Event Viewer when the level of these resources reaches a warning or a critical state.

mount

A term associated with information stores, it refers to the process of making a store available for use.

MTA

See message transfer agent (MTA).

Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME)

A standard that allows multiple files of various content types to be encapsulated into one message. Request for Comments (RFCs) 2045 through 2049 currently define MIME and are considered to be one single standard.
