In the last chapter, I discussed how the user's skill level should affect your user interface design. Clearly, understanding how the user actually makes use of your program should affect the design even more. While there are many different types of programs and ways of using a program, most programs can be described as either an application or a utility, and this simple categorization can help you make significant decisions about your user interface design. In this chapter, I'll explore these types of programs and how each type influences user interface design. One interesting conclusion is that program type strongly impacts the user's skill level with the program. This chapter, then, can be regarded as the flip side of the previous chapter—the user's skill level affects the program's design, but the program's design also affects the user's skill level.
