Chapter Ten. Project Time Management

According to the PMBOK, 3rd edition, Project Time Management consists of the "processes required to accomplish timely completion of the project." Although the chapter topic title is time management, this chapter is more about schedule management and the processes necessary to complete and control a working schedule for a project. The process areas listed in the PMBOK are: Activity Definition, Activity Sequencing, Activity Resource Estimating, Activity Duration Estimating, Schedule Development, and Schedule Control.

The document you start with for this whole process is the Scope Statement, discussed in the previous chapter. Because the overall scope of the project is included in the Scope Statement, this document will be your guide for all of the work to be done in the Project Time Management area. Not only the work to be done, but also what is to be left out of the project. Thus, the Scope Statement includes all that is needed to be done to execute the project and ensures that tasks not relevant to the particular project are left out.

Once you have a Scope Statement, you begin to break down the tasks needed to execute the project, and this process is called decomposition. After you have completed breaking down or decomposing the Scope Statement into the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), you then need to break the WBS into individual work packages so that you can start developing the project schedule. Some people think the project plan is the same thing as the schedule. However, the project plan is much more than just the project schedule. The project plan contains all the management plans and processes used during the execution of the project. So the project plan and the schedule are not the same. In fact, the schedule is only one part of the project plan.
