Chapter 16: Starting from Scratch the Smart Way

Overview

Now you’ve reached the point that I often cautioned you to avoid doing prematurely in previous chapters: the time when you decide to wipe the electronic slate clean, so to speak, and start fresh.

Why have I asked you to wait? Because starting from scratch destroys the files already stored on your hard drive. You’re wiping everything out so you can completely redo your file system and the Windows installation. You’re obliterating your documents, sound files, updated drivers, unique configurations, and Windows customization.

This is very significant.

However, sometimes starting from scratch is necessary. This chapter explains in what situations a fresh start may help and takes you through the steps for doing it intelligently and with your best chance for success. You’ll also learn why it’s smart to stop after you’ve installed Windows to evaluate your system for performance and stability before installing any applications.

This chapter also covers taking your workplace from your old PC to a new one, offering shopping tips and explaining why you can probably skip that extra warranty.
