What's in This Book

This book isn't meant to be read from cover to cover, although you're certainly free to do just that if the mood strikes you. Instead, most of the chapters are set up as self-contained units that you can dip into at will to extract whatever nuggets of information you need. The book is divided into four main parts. To give you the big picture before diving in, here's a summary of what you'll find in each part:

  • Part 1, "Office 2003 Application Tricks" The five chapters in Part 1 offer up a collection of tricks for each of the five main Office 2003 programs: Word (Chapter 1), Excel (Chapter 2), PowerPoint (Chapter 3), Access (Chapter 4), and Outlook (Chapter 5).

  • Part 2, "Office 2003 Sharing and Collaboration Tricks" The four chapters in Part 2 focus on two of the Office suite's most powerful features: sharing data and collaborating with other users. You learn how to share data between programs (Chapter 6), collaborate on documents (Chapter 7), use Office documents on the Web (Chapter 8), and collaborate using a Tablet PC (Chapter 9).

  • Part 3, "Office 2003 Customization Tricks" This part presents four chapters that help you take Office to the next level. You learn how to customize the Office programs to work faster and more efficiently (Chapter 10), the basics of the VBA programming language (Chapter 11), a fistful of useful VBA macros (Chapter 12), and how to automate Access without programming (Chapter 13).

  • Part 4, "Office 2003 Security Tricks" Security is high on everyone's mind these days, so the book closes with two chapters that explore Office security issues and solutions. You learn security tricks for Office as a whole in Chapter 14, and for Outlook email in particular in Chapter 15.
