Section 77. Remote Desktop Management

77. Remote Desktop Management

Remote desktop management allows someone sitting at one computer to connect to and control another computer in a distant location.

Whereas PC users cannot control Macs using web-based GoToMyPC.com (subscription based, $19.95 monthly) and LogMeIn.com (free for individual users; Pro version for $12.95 monthly), Mac users can use these services to control remote PCs.

For Mac to Mac control, it's hard to beat cross-platform Timbuktu Pro (www.netopia.com, $94.95). The latest version incorporates Skype telephony to simplify connections and tunnel through firewalls.

Apple's professional-grade Mac to Mac solution (Remote Desktop, $299.00) targets network administrators who use it to upgrade software, provide tech support, and tweak settings on corporate machines.
