Database designers build tables that form relationships with other tables through the use of linking fields, primary keys, and foreign keys. Knowledge of the data relationships that tie tables to one another is essential in creating a good report. Understanding database terminology such as records and fields becomes critical when working with table linking. To do the linking, four table relationships and five link types can be combined in various ways to create unique data result sets.
The decision to involve multiple tables creates a left-to-right relationship between them, which Crystal Reports facilitates through the Database Expert. Working from left to right with linked tables, report designers choose among inner joins, left outer joins, right outer joins, and full outer joins to achieve the blending of data that answers their business questions.
