Chapter 17 - The Crystal Programming Forest
Mastering Crystal Reports 9
by Cate McCoy and Gord Maric
Sybex 2003

Crystal Reports has a programming interface that allows developers to control Crystal Reports from code. The interface provides all the functionality of the end-user tool but allows a programmer to create a custom application and embed Crystal Reports in the application. This is very powerful because it allows the developer to focus on the functionality of the application and not on the details of writing the report.

Version 9 of Crystal Reports supports two very different development environments: legacy Microsoft COM-based tools, such as Visual Basic 6, Delphi, and C++, and the .NET development environment. Crystal Reports also includes the RAS Server, which provides entry-level Crystal Enterprise services. RAS can run in a Microsoft or Unix environment.

Upgrading a legacy VB application to .NET will only work if you did not use the RDC’s Report Designer; otherwise, Microsoft .NET upgrade wizard will upgrade your code, but your code is not guaranteed to work efficiently or upgrade smoothly. We recommend not upgrading. Microsoft and Crystal Decisions will support both environments for years to come. .NET has cleaned up the development environment considerably, but the changes are great and it will take time to get used to them.

Now that we can see the programming forest from the trees, let’s begin examining each area in detail in the following chapters.
