Chapter 12 - Analyzing Data Visually
Mastering Crystal Reports 9
by Cate McCoy and Gord Maric
Sybex 2003

The company motto of Crystal Decisions is “Access. Analyze. Report. Share.” The analysis portion of their strategy is well served through the use of charts, graphs, maps, cross-tabs, and OLAP capabilities. Visually representing data with charts, graphs, and maps can help you answer business questions in an easy-to-understand manner, and Crystal’s built-in tools make it simple to do so. Charts and graphs are ideal for visualizing any quantifiable data, while geographic maps add a graphical dimension to data based on regions and locations. Cross-tab data presents information in row and column format, with summarization information in intersecting cells; single parameters and group parameters can be used in cross-tabulation as well as percentage data.

As an OLAP client, Crystal Reports provides analysis capabilities for working interactively with multidimension data and complex data calculations. To these tools, Crystal adds the ability to perform in-place editing and on-the-fly variable comparisons; it also provides the built-in Analyzer, making visual analysis an easy and powerful way to work with an organization’s data.
