Path Manipulation Basics

After you create a path, you can move it in the image window, copy it and paste it into the same image window or drag a copy to another image window, display and hide the path, save it, and, of course, delete it. Here’s the lowdown:

  • To move a path in the image window: Select the path you want to move in the Paths palette, and then select the Path Selection tool from the Toolbox. Next, click in the path to select it, and then drag it to a new location.

  • To copy a path in the same image window: Select the path you want to copy in the Paths palette. Then, drag the path over the Create New Path button at the bottom of the palette.

  • To copy a path into another image window: Select the path you want to copy in the Paths palette. Then, drag the path from the Paths palette into the new image window.

  • To save a work path: Double-click the Work Path in the Paths palette. Enter a name for the path in the Save Path dialog box, and then click OK.

  • To display a path in the image window: Select the path in the Paths palette.

  • To hide a path and not show it in the image window: Shift+click the path’s name in the Paths palette.

  • To deselect a path in the image window: Select the Path Selection tool from the Toolbox. Click outside the path in the image window. The path will still be displayed, but its anchor points will be hidden.

  • To delete a path: Select the path you want to delete in the Paths palette, and then drag it over the trash icon at the bottom of the palette.
